Figerpicking on guitar?

I play guitar for a while, but I looked fingerpicking today. I wondered if I had to get used soon to use all my fingers of my hand instead of choosing what my guitar Dummies book recommended that dont use your little finger. I do not want to start any bad habits before is too late. And so, I wonder what is served with a base note in a chord / scale. Thanks

Justin, classical guitar is not always used right little finger to pull the strings. The reason is that the little finger is much shorter than the other fingers do not align well with the other three fingers on the strings. By Therefore, if the Pinkie is included in the collection, the hand is in an awkward squat reading and fatigue quickly. Furthermore, the same intensity (regularly) collection is difficult. Since Western music is triadic in nature (the chains of three or more notes) the lack of the little finger is not a loss. The thumb plays bass notes regularly and the other three fingers play the treble notes … works quite well in practice. It is true that flamenco guitarists can use a finger to boot, but his playing style is very different from the classical guitar and strums depends heavily on human resources for rhythmic effects. If you want a good start with finger-style game, I recommend the following book: "You Can Teach Yourself Classic Guitar" Will the Bay. (A publication of Mel Bay for fifteen dollars to your local music store nearby). Good luck to you in this effort worthwhile. Cliff E. (classical guitarist)

Sad Fingerpicking Guitar Songs in Minor keys?

Hello all, wondering if any fellow guitar players out there could suggest a romantic/sad guitar song for me to learn featuring fingerpicking rather than strumming. An ideal suggestion would be a song like Joe Satriani’s “Tears in the Rain.” Kansas’ “Dust in the Wind” and Croce’s “Time in a bottle” would also be viable suggestions, although I can already play both of those. Acoustic guitar is preferred; but any genre is fine, including classical, jazz, blues, romantic spanish guitar and flamenco. The less commercial the better. The less known the better. The sadder the better.

Thank you for your input, I really appreciate it.
Difficulty level: intermediate – advanced intermediate, challenging songs are preferred. But not too difficult please.

Tears – Django Rheinhardt and Stephane Grappeli

(I’m not music-pro enough to know whether they’re the “original artists” or not, but theirs is the version I know of/listen to a lot. It’s fun and you can play it a couple different ways.)
btw it’s not all minor, but it generally sounds like a sad song to me.

guitar fingerpicking
i want to learn folk style guitar fingerpicking.. examples inside?

alright.. so the style im looking to learn doesnt neccissarily have to be fingerpicking, thats just the sound i like.

here’s a video of langhorne slim, and this is the kind of playing i want to learn (in this video he has a pick)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_L9WqGbL0Ro

and heres bobby long.. just start it around 00:45
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V_NPr8cFw7s&feature=related

anyways.. you get what i mean. if there are really good examples of this style, or videos teaching how to play like this that would be great

or if you just have some advice, that would be great too

ive been working on this, but im just learning guitar so i have a ways to go and could use some help
oh.. maybe in the first video he wasnt using a pick.. i cant tell now lol

There are many variations in American fingerstyle guitar playing. Mark knopfler uses a pick for the bass notes (primarily) and the rest of his rather remarkable digits for the single (yeah, right) notes. You can use a thumb pick and finger picks (like banjo players usually use). You can also just use your fingers/fingernails.

Most any variation works off of this beginning: hold a chord with your left hand and play the bass notes (preferably alternating) with your thumb, while following a pattern that you work out with your first two or three fingers (pinky is normally useless for this). At first just try to work out one pattern – for all songs. If and when you start getting good at this, you will develop a slightly different style for each song you play. It is amazing the many different ways one song can be played using fingerstyle. It is very rewarding and well worth the effort!

I will give you some sources to look through below for more information.

The main reason that anyone starts playing the guitar is because they want to learn to play songs, and want to play them now! Unfortunately, things don’t really work that quickly, and most beginning musicians are advised to start slowly and progress slowly.

But why is that? Why don’t most instructors tell you to dive right into the material and start learning the good stuff? Well, here are the main purposes why beginners should progress at a slow rate when playing the guitar.

You need to work on sticking to the tempo.

A song or scale is really no good unless there’s a solid tempo that goes along with it. While you’re still beginning, playing along with jam tracks or a metronome is very good practice to realize the pull of the tempo and how to stick to it consistently.

Mastering your technique is important at this stage.

You know how math teachers always wanted you to show your work because that was more important than the answer. If you’re a beginner playing the guitar, it’s the same thing.

It’s nice that you can struggle through something and play it, but everyone knows that you had to struggle to get there. By learning the correct techniques for all of your skills properly by taking it slow, you can start nailing songs more accurately and without as much difficulty in the future.

Practicing correct posture can solve speed problems later.

Starting slow can be frustrating sometimes, but starting too fast can lead you to develop bad habits that won’t help you later when your skills really depend on it. Take the time you need to develop correct posture in your strumming, picking, fingerings, and how you hold the guitar in order speed up the progress you make later shredding through faster licks.

You need to be used to the repetition.

If practicing music over and over again just doesn’t sound like something that you’re willing to tolerate, then playing the guitar isn’t really for you. As a beginner, you’ll learn very soon that playing is all about repetition and the sooner you make peace with it, the sooner you can impress your friends at the camp fire.

The value of your practice time will become more obvious.

It’s advisable to play at least 20 minutes per day to make sure that you continue to progress on your instrument, but once you see how much really gets accomplished in that time, you might not think it can stand. Starting out slowly can teach you the importance of using all of the practice time you can to develop your skills into being a guitar monster.

You need to focus on the details.

This is almost a summation of everything, but starting slowly is all about paying attention to the details and not the broad ideas. As soon as all of the details are easy to execute for you, everything else should fall into place without as much effort.

It’s a tricky game to play and learn the guitar well enough to entertain your friends with real songs, but you can’t get to that point if you rush. Take all the time you need in order to learn everything properly and you should be passing up the competition down the line.

Kyle Hoffman is an experienced guitarist that loves to play just as a hobby, and to perform live on stage. To learn Kyle’s valuable tips for beginning the guitar the RIGHT way, visit How To Guitar Play as part of his popular guitar blog, How To Guitar Tune.
